GROUP CLASS SCHEDULE

Basic Manners for Adult Dogs

Rocky Mountain Dog Training - Basic Manners (Adult) Group Class

6 months+

This is a 6-week course meets 1 hour weekly and is geared toward friendly adult dogs. We focus on teaching basic dog training behaviors: sit, down, stand, come when called, focus, touch targeting, loose leash walking, leave it, drop it, take it, stay, mat targeting, polite greetings, impulse control, understanding non-verbal communication from your dog, curbing undesirable behaviors and relationship building.

Dogs must be free from aggression and safe with other dogs and people to register for this class

Week 1

  • Body Language
       - You will also receive video footage to watch at home
  • Shopping List / Supplies
  • Capturing Attention (Eye Contact)
  • Sit to Say Please / Learn to Earn (Teach dog Sit is the right answer in all contexts)
  • Making the Most of Meal Time (using meals for training, interactive activities)
  • Building a Bank of Reinforcers (reinforcers beyond food)
  • Week 1 is humans only, dogs join us in week 2

Week 2

  • Sit (lured)
  • Down (lured)
  • Stand (lured)
  • Sit (hand signal)
  • Down (hand signal)

  • Touch Targeting
  • It's Yer Choice (for Impulse Control)
  • Surprise Party Recall
  • Tug for Impulse Control / Drop It

Week 3

  • Sit (adding verbal cue)
  • Down (adding verbal cue)
  • Stand (adding verbal cue)
  • Random Order Series
  • Introducing Push, Drop, Stick (managing your training criteria)
  • Introducing No Reward Markers
  • Leave It
  • Loose Leash Walking – No distractions
  • Premack Recall (distraction becomes the reward)

Week 4

  • Moving to Variable Reinforcement Schedule
  • Speedy Cues
  • Eliminating Treats from the body
       - Maintaining an appropriate rate of reinforcement when requesting functional behaviors vs. consistency when in training mode.
  • Down / Stay on Mat – with food distraction, with movement around dog
  • Adding Distance to Stay
  • Loose Leash Walking Review (depending on need for class)
  • Using It's Yer Choice in real life contexts

Week 5

  • Greeting Control
       - Touch Target for Greetings
       - Approach / Retreat Method
  • Adding Duration to Stay
       - Duration 1sec – 10 sec.
       - Variable Schedule at 15+ sec.
  • Triangle Recall (Premack)
  • Focus Tricks
  • Classical Conditioning – for Graduation Cap

Week 6

  • Expanding Stay To New Environments
  • Sit / Stay for body handling and vet visits
  • Troubleshooting outstanding behaviors
  • Review any outstanding exercises not yet covered
  • Anti-Jumping Exercises
  • Graduation Pictures
  • Course Evaluation

Please note: While we do our best to stick to this schedule, at times, there may be slight variations based on the needs of the class. I also want to note that in addition to each of these topics there is always bonus material in your packets which we aren't able to cover in the class but that are helpful overall to your long term success.

 

Accepted Record Formats:

We require you to provide a copy of your records to us. This can be a hard copy we may keep on file, or sent via email in a .pdf format.

  • We accept records on veterinary letterhead.
  • If records are coming from the breeder or rescue group, the stickers from the vaccination vials must be included.
  • Handwritten records, or records not on vet letterhead and without stickers are not accepted and we do not make exceptions.

This is to protect our clients to the very best of our ability. While rare, these illnesses are life-threatening and our clients appreciate our diligence in minimizing these risks. Thank you for understanding!

Puppies:
Distemper - On Booster Schedule
Parvo - On Booster Schedule
Rabies - When Age-Appropriate

Adult Dogs:
At 6+ months, all dogs must be up to date on distemper, parvo and rabies vaccinations. Bordetella required annually. Proof of vaccination required to participate in classes.

The distemper and parvo vaccinations are part of a combo vaccination given in 3 rounds of boosters at 6-8 weeks, 10-12 weeks and 14-16 weeks to increase immunity. Puppies do not need to have completed the series at start, but must stay up to date and on schedule throughout participation. Rabies is administered between 10 weeks and 6 months depending on veterinarian preferences and existing vaccination schedule.
